ABUJA, NIGERIA – Senate President Godswill Akpabio has rejected allegations of bias against the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, insisting that claims of political favoritism are unfounded.

Akpabio made the remarks on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, in Abuja while attending the inauguration of the National Revenue Service headquarters. His comments come amid growing criticism on social media linking Amupitan to a controversial post suggesting partisan support.

Defending the INEC chairman, Akpabio said the viral claim was misrepresented and taken out of context. According to him, the statement in question merely read “victory is sure” without endorsing any political party.

“He did not say victory is sure for APC or PDP. The statement was neutral,” Akpabio explained, adding that critics deliberately twisted its meaning to create suspicion.

He further noted that the post being referenced was made before Amupitan assumed office as INEC chairman, stressing that at the time, he was a private citizen and a lecturer.

“Anyone is free to support any candidate as a private individual, but once in public office, neutrality is expected,” Akpabio said, maintaining that the chairman has remained impartial in his current role.

The controversy stems from a 2023 social media exchange involving APC National Youth Leader, Dayo Israel, who celebrated electoral gains in his community. Critics alleged that an account believed to belong to Amupitan replied to the post with “victory is sure,” sparking accusations of bias.

However, INEC has strongly denied the claims, describing them as false and part of a misinformation campaign. The commission also clarified that Amupitan does not operate a personal social media account.

INEC’s Director of Information and Communication Technology, Lawrence Bayode, said a thorough investigation is underway. He explained that the commission is working with security agencies and independent forensic experts to verify the claims, rather than relying on screenshots or artificial intelligence tools.

The commission reiterated its commitment to transparency and fairness, assuring Nigerians of its dedication to upholding the integrity of the electoral process.
