World Marks Rabies Day, Nigeria Pledges Elimination by 2030

The global community today, September 28, observes World Rabies Day, an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about the prevention and control of the deadly disease.

This year’s theme, “Act now: you, me, community,” highlights the need for collective responsibility in tackling rabies, which continues to claim thousands of lives each year, particularly in Africa.

In Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has reaffirmed government’s commitment to eradicating rabies by 2030. Authorities have declared an all-out campaign against the disease, calling for stronger vaccination drives and wider public sensitisation.

Pet owners are being urged to ensure that their dogs and cats receive regular rabies vaccinations, while communities are encouraged to participate in awareness programmes. Policymakers have also been tasked with enforcing pet licensing and strengthening data collection systems to support effective disease control.

World Rabies Day serves as a reminder that rabies, though fatal, is preventable with timely vaccination and collective action.
